The construction of Newry Canal began around 1730, taking around 11 years to complete, being capable of handling vessels over 100 tons. 1900, as the railway and other forms of transport developed, the canal was abandoned as it was no longer commercially viable.

When completed in 1850, the Albert Basin and the ship canal gave Newry 'a flooding dock of respect proportions' which played a major role in the development of the linen industry following the American Civil War and the loss of cotton to the world market.

Visible to the South west of the basin is Drumalane Flax Spinning Mill complete with chimney. This was built c. 1816 by William Hill Irvine. His involvement with the linen industry ended in failure but he immigrated to Australia and became Prime Minister of the state of Victoria.
